Created in 1984 for Li Cunxin and Martha Butler for the International Ballet Competition in Tokyo where the choreographer received the gold medal for choreography and the dancers silver medals. Stevenson was inspired by Stanley Kramer’s 1959 post-apocalyptic film On the Beach in which humanity suffers the fatal consequences of a third world war. His pas de deux is an elegy and proclamation of life from a space marred by death. Premiered by Acosta Danza on 16 April 2016 at the Gran Teatro de La Habana ‘Alicia Alonso’.
