Acosta Danza, a company directed by the first dancer Carlos Acosta, celebrates the fifth anniversary of its foundation this Monday, September 28.
The occasion is the perfect opportunity to thank all the institutions, companies, professionals and the public that have accompanied her in this five-year period. With the desire to always have Cuban culture as the main reference, Acosta Danza has worked to bring the best of international choreographic arts to the country and bring to the world some of the most valuable Cuban arts.
Its repertoire covers various dance styles always with a contemporary perspective: from ballet to folk and popular dances. Its dancers have been recognized for their expressive versatility and technical power. Several seasons in Havana and in almost all the country's provinces endorse the work of Acosta Danza during these years.
International venues such as the Royal Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall and the Sadler’s Wells Theater in the UK; the National Theater of China, and the New York City Center of the United States have had Cuban artists in their programs.
The company's list of choreographers is prestigious with prominent names from the international scene such as Goyo Montero, Marianela Boán, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Ben Stevenson, Saburo Teshigawara, Justin Peck, Pontus Lidberg, Christopher Bruce, María Rovira and Rafael Bonachela. Along with them are young Jorge Crecis, Mickael Marso, Miguel Altunaga, Alexis Fernández ‘Maca’, Juliano Nunes, Ely Regina Hernández and Raúl Reinoso.
Under the name Acosta Danza, the work of creators of the stature of musicians Silvio Rodríguez, Leo Brouwer, X Alfonso and Pepe Gavilondo are also brought together; visual artists such as Glenda León, Elizabet Cerviño and Ernesto Doñas; designers such as Vladimir Cuenca, Angelo Alberto, Hussein Chalayan, Maykel González, Celia Ledon and Alisa Peláez.
Acosta Danza has an academy, where Cuban students and scholarship recipients from other countries receive mixed dance training that prepares them to join the cast of any company in the future. The company belongs to the Havana Dance Center; It has the support of the National Council for the Performing Arts and the Ministry of Culture.
In the midst of the current circumstances imposed by the Covid-19, Acosta Danza reaffirms her willingness to continue working towards the development of Cuban arts, confident that she will soon be able to meet her audience again.
